The role of an occupational therapist is to help the client achieve a fulfilled and satisfied state in life by using "purposeful activity or interventions designed to achieve functional outcomes which promote health, prevent injury or disability and which develop, improve, sustain or restore the highest possible level of independence." Skilled Therapy to Restore Function and Prevent Decline

Retraining in Activities of Daily Living

  2. Self-feeding following Brain Injury, Stroke, or Dementia

  5. Homemaking and Home Repair

Community Skills Retraining

  1. Grocery Shopping

  2. Driving Safety Screening and Referrals

  3. Use of Senior Transportation Services

  4. Safe use of assistive devices in Community-- at Post Office, Library, Places of Worship


Low Vision Assessment and Retraining

  1. Specific evaluation and recommendations for maximizing independence and safety in the home and community

  2. Instruction in Compensatory Methods for visual decline

  3. Facilitate involvement in local community agencies to support continued adaptation to visual losses


     Communication Skills

Falls Prevention Programming

  1. Home-based Occupational Therapy Assessment

  2. Recommendations for adaptive equipment appropriate for client's home and lifestyle to support energy conservation

  3. Liaison to construction contractors for proper placement of grab bars, railings, and ramps


Managing Dementia or Emotional Challenges 

  1. Identify occupational roles that patient has stopped performing

  2. Identification of physical/social factors that contribute to decreased participation

  3. Therapeutic activities to guide client into participation into meaningful occupations and return to former roles


Home Management and Organizational Skills Retraining

  1. Instruction in Compensatory Methods for visual or cognitive decline

  2. Referrals to Senior Support Services as needed


Caregiver Instruction and Support

  1. Caregiver training to ensure continuity following therapy

  2. Therapeutic support for clients returning to independent living following illness or injury

  3. Graded activity program that moves beyond self-care independence to support full participation in all roles and occupations in the home and community

  4. Functional Maintenance Programs

  5. Scheduled Follow-Up Screenings with request for referrals as indicated


Aging in Place

  1. Respecting the unique interests, environments, and preferences of of the person who wants to age in place

  2. Assessment of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors that may contribute to Falls

  3. Education and Training to reduce risk of falls

  4. Referrals to Clinic Based Physical Therapy for Lower Extremity Strengthening and Balance Training
